This is a question that all writers are asked and most writers dread. Why the dread? Because it is one of those questions that is inherently rhetorical.
To "get an agent" there is one thing and one thing only that you can/must/need do: write well. Thats it. Now, thats not to say that there arent some great writers out there without representation and its not to say that some of the most powerful agencies in town dont rep some really awful writers, but it is the single most efficient way to get an agent.
If youre still reading then congrats to you! You just leaped ahead of a bunch of other would-be scribes who stopped reading when they realized that I wasnt going to type ad nauseam about the secrets of properly worded query letters, and/or the hook in a synopsis that every agent looks for. People pay good money for writing classes where these secrets are revealed, but in my humble opinion, the only way those classes actually help your writing is by lightening your wallet and thus putting your tuckus in a more balanced position as you sit at your keyboard.
